Udupi, Sep 4: The district has witnessed a sudden rise in the number of coronavirus infections but the fact that the death rate has been dwindling has given rise to hope among the people.
With the steep increase in the number of people being tested for coronavirus, the number of infected people has also been going up. As infections are detected faster, the death rate is declining. Currently, the death rate in the district is at 0.85 per cent, the officials said.

The district has been witnessing an increase in the number of asymptomatic infected people. The number of tests has also seen a sharp increase. The officials said that delayed admission into the hospitals will cause a shortage of ventilators. This will, in turn, result in an increase in the number of people getting admitted to intensive care units. But they said the district is prepared to face any such eventualities.
Deputy commissioner of the district G Jagadeesha said that private hospitals have been asked to reserve 50 per cent beds for the people where the infected people are being admitted. However, he mentioned that the patients who go to private hospitals on their own have to bear their treatment expenses themselves.
Dr Shashikiran Umakanth said that there is no dearth of beds for the infected people in the district. He said that just increasing the number of ventilators will not be enough, and the hiring of experts is also needed to handle the situation.
