'Game Over': India bans PUBG, 117 more Chinese apps

New Delhi, Sep 2 (IANS): In yet another surgical strike on Chinese apps, the Indian government on Wednesday banned 118 apps, including the immensely popular PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile, Baidu and several VPNs that allowed access to TikTok that was earlier banned.

The action came after the fresh Chinese incursion attempts in Indian territory at Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh.

The PUBG game now has more than 600 million downloads and 50 million active players globally, not including the Chinese mainland where a rebranded version of the game is called 'Game for Peace'.

PUBG has millions of users, especially young, in India.

The ban on PUBG came as it announced the arrival of a new gaming era with its 1.0 version, along with global mobile esports tournament PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC) with a grand prize pool of $2 million (about Rs 15 crore).

Earlier, the government barred 47 Chinese apps from operating in the country which was largely clones of the previously 59 apps banned in June.

On June 29, the government banned 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, WeChat and UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community over national security concerns amid the border tussle in Ladakh which led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley clash with Chinese PLA troops.

"These measures have been undertaken since there is credible information that these apps are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order," the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology statement had said.

According to the ministry, the move would safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile users.

Other Chinese apps in the banned list were Club Factory, SHAREit, Likee, Mi Video Call (Xiaomi), Weibo, Baidu, BIGO LIVE and more.

Banning addictive games and apps that force users to supply permissions which in turn can weaponize your personal information for surveillance, by an adversary that threatens our sovereignty is a good move. Remember, many of our students that get hooked onto these apps are wasting hours and hours of their precious time, becoming a liability to their parents who cannot/refuse to control their children, and to the country at large. Addictive apps lead to several disorders including shorter lifespan of attention.

This is an emotional move which will help some to produce substandard expensive goods which the consumer will have to buy resulting in an economic contraction. Athmnirbhar bharat is also a tried and failed policy. The govt should concentrate on infrastructure and people are more than capable of developing economy.

Pubg is not Chinese. It’s Korean. But it is developed by Tencent which is a Chinese game developing company. Most probably Bluehole which owns Pubg will partner with another game developer cause they don’t want to lose Indian users.

We look immature when we ban harmless gaming apps. We also attract the wrath of youth.
Instead levy heavy taxes on Chinese phones, tablets, laptops and PCs. That will hit them harder.

I hope the government will take a daring step to ban every non essential item from this despicable country. They gobble up our land, they lie, they spread disease, they ruin our economy .
The three biggest enemies of India are , lying corrupt politicians , A terrorist neighbouring country , and a lying greedy expansionist China.

Why was it not done in the first phase itself when India banned 59 Chinese apps? India is a very advanced country in IT and we definitely don't need their apps. If Chinese can do such apps which are used worldwide, why can't India do?

This was needed. No need to be worried this will hit them hard because pubg was more popular in Asia and India was it's no 1 place. Very few people play pubg in the states and European countries. In india our youth sit for hours trying to get one useless chicken dinner. 1 game was 30 minutes very good decision this had to go
