Bengaluru: ‘State actively considering option of selling liquor online’ - Excise minister

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Sep 2: The government is actively considering a proposal to sell liquor online. Excise minister H Nagesh, dropped broad hints about this at a press meet he addressed on Tuesday September 1. Noting that other states have been selling liquor online, he said that a committee headed by the commissioner in the excise department, Lokesh, has been formed to conduct detailed study and submit a report.

"Women and youngsters find it difficult to move out to buy liquor. Therefore, we are considering this option. We will discuss the advantages and negative points of this proposal with experts. There is of course opposition from some quarters for online liquor sale. After the report is received covering these points, the issue will be discussed threadbare with the chief minister before a final decision is arrived at," he explained.

The minister noted that liquor consumption has been permitted in clubs, pubs, as well as bars and restaurants from Tuesday onwards. He said that the government expects a revenue of Rs 80 crore every day, adding that this might account for 50 percent rise in the department's revenue.

He clarified that fresh licences have already been issued to open MSIL outlets and no other liquor outlets are being permitted now. He said that if the department comes to know about drug peddling cases, the information will be shared with the police department, and the practicability of conducting joint operations will be explored.

When there are so many other issues to be uplifted importance can be given to the sectors which are lagging behind. Nobody dies if they don't consume liquor. Let's give priority to basic necessities.

Both central and state governments are out of money and are blaming coronavirus rather than poor management. God only can help poor people. I can’t think anyone selling alcohol to make money when people are dying like flies.

Does it mean someone younger than 18 can buy liquor?

Don't know how it is controlled by the shops, but controlling sales of alcohol online to the minors will be very difficult, perhaps impossible.

Agree the state is getting bankrupt without funds from Centre (= GST share) and hardly any income from the businesses. But any quick-fixes to raise revenue can have dangerous consequences.

This is what I wrote then. It is not a support. I do not drink alcohol. Not even a drop.

I do not support any sales of alcohol - online or offline!

I wrote as below (when there was some move by the Government to sell online):

    >>>>>>>
This was bound to happen sooner or later.

The online sale will ensure the Government collects all taxes.

With shops retailing, there is not only the issue of significant tax evasion, but also a chance of selling
    adulterated contents.

It must be noted however that the retail outlets are often owned by smaller investors, and generate a
    fair amount of employment.

Regardless, liquor destroys individuals, families and the society.

    A good suggestion. Thank you.

Very good decision. Also implement 'one hour delivery' or 'half an hour delivery' at some price premiums. That will help us a lot. Sometimes it so happens that you feel like drinking a particular bourbon and when you pout the first peg, bottle is empty!!!
But please do not allow private entities to sell online. Instead of whiskey we might get black tea in a bottle!!!

What I am reading in the first sentence of first paragraph of your comment Shankarooo.... 😳😳!!!! ...if like this, as Mangalurean said in his comment, students will be more beneficiaries. Should be given online only above 65 onwards..to live life after retirement. Before that, no.. no.... no. But, your whole year's quota is over on January, 2020. Right na? 😆😆😆

    No... I drink responsibly.
Jokes apart, I suggest the government to keep the prices high. It should keep only premium brands for sale online. There are ways to implement effectively without making the liquor available for the under-aged ones.
