Belagavi, Sept 1: This entire district was devastated due to deluge last year. The displaced families have not been able to recover even after a year. They lost their houses and crops and the affected people were driven to streets. They have been staying in community halls and Maths. The lives of the people affected by the floods of Malaprabha river in Ramadurga taluk continue to be unstable now. Hundreds of houses in Avaradi village in the taluk crashed to the ground. Only a few among the distressed people have got compensation. The other families have been pinning their hopes on the assurance of the government to disburse compensation.
One of them, Mylarappa Ronad, lost his house due to flood last year. He has not received any compensation from the government so far. His family has been spending time inside Phalahareshwara Math. The family with a year-old-child has been leading life in a small house of the Math.
The Swamiji of the Math allowed him to stay here, after noticing that the family had no shelter. But the government is yet to disburse compensation to him.
Out of 58,498 displaced families, whose houses were damaged by floods, over 10,000 families have not got their compensation even after a year. These families have been leading life elsewhere, totally relying on the government's promise. The government's Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Scheme site has been closed and no distressed family is getting compensation.
A few days back, some of the displaced families staged dharna for three days and three nights without break at Ramadurga. Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, visited them and promised them to get the site opened within 15 days and disburse compensation. The affected people believed in his promise and are waiting for the helping hand of the government.
This year again, a lot of crops were damaged due to floods in Ramadurga taluk. The farmers have urged the government to conduct a survey and see that compensation is disbursed without delay.
