I read with nostalgia about the passing away of Mr. VS Kudva because I was the Editorial Architect, compiler and main content writer of the Platinum Jubilee Souvenir (1940-2015) of Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry . In one of the chapters under “Pioneers and Leaders”, there is an entry titled “S V Kudva: Versatile Achiever and Sharer”. I am reproducing the first para:
My sister’s husband, Eric Sequira, a veteran labour lawyer in Mangaluru (who passed away on May 9, 2020) once told me an anecdote about Srinivas V. (Vaman) Kudva… In the mis-1970s, because of a shortage of railway rakes, the foundry of Jeppu Worksops ran short of coke, sourced from eastern India coal mines, for its furnace. It turned to the only major furnace owner, Canara Workshops Ltd., for help. Its promoter, Srinivas Kudva, promptly responded by supplying the required coke. He also left instructions at his workshop that Jeppu Workshops should be obliged with coke supply on replacement basis in future as well. According to him, if Jeppu Workshop, the doyen of workshops in South Canara, “ does not deserve such accommodation, who else does?”.( p 145 of Platinum Jubilee Souvenir).
