New Delhi, Aug 24: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting which concluded after seven hours decided that Sonia Gandhi would remain the Congress interim president for now. It was also decided that within the next six months a new chief would be elected.
Remarking at the dissent letter writers, she said that there was 'no ill-will' towards anyone in the party. "I am hurt but they are my colleagues, bygones are bygones, let us work together," Sonia said at the end of the meeting.
The meeting was held after 26 top leaders wrote a letter seeking full-time visible leadership, in turn leading to Sonia Gandhi's letter asking to be relieved as the party president and begin deliberations to set in motion a process to find a replacement. However, sharp criticisms emerged against the writers while Rahul Gandhi accused the dissidents of collaborating with BJP.
In a letter, over 20 Congress leaders have sought for a full time effective visible and active leadership. It also sought collective leadership and honest introspection reforms such as decentralization of power, empowerment of state units and organizational elections at every level, as per reports from sources.
