Udupi, Jul 25: Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice President of India, has lauded the effort of ASHA worker Rajeevi, who drove the auto rickshaw herself at 3 am and got a pregnant woman admitted to the hospital.
Tweeting about the incident, Naidu said, "The work of Asha worker Rajeevi, who got the pregnant woman admitted to the hospital at 3 am is commendable."
Srilatha, a resident of Pernankila had called Rajeevi at 3 am and said that she is having labour pain. Rajeevi responded to the distress call of Srilatha immediately and drove the pregnant woman in her auto and got her admitted to Udupi government hospital for women and children, which is at a distance of 20 km. Srilatha gave birth to a baby boy. Both the mother and child are healthy.

"I learnt driving auto rickshaw from my husband. Now it has become profession for me. I have got many people admitted to hospital earlier also. I do not taken auto fare for pregnant women if they are going to the hospital for delivery," said Rajeevi.
Bus service is very sparse in Pernankila area. Rajeevi's auto service helps women of the area to reach their homes safely especially after dark. She works as an Asha worker from morning till afternoon and then works as an auto driver till night.
