Tumakuru: Refusing to give in, youth grows tomatoes, earns Rs 20 lac

Daijiworld Media Network - Tumakuru (SP)

Tumakuru, Jul 24: We come across many people who lament that their business was devastated by coronavirus pandemic and that they have no idea what they can do to redeem what they have lost. There are some who also have ended their lives. However, there is a youth who has shown to the world that if we make up our minds, nothing is impossible.

The youth in question was dealing in betel nuts for a living. The lockdown which arrived like a bolt from the blue delivered him a big blow. He thought about various options and then chose to undertake agriculture. Nijananda Murthy from Bandihalli village in Nittur revenue division, Gubbi taluk, kept himself busy by engaging coolies from his village who were sitting idle. He invested two to three lac rupees in his three-acre land and raised tomato crops. He now sells tomatoes at the rate of Rs 700 to 750 per box at the APMC Market, Kolar. He has already recovered his investment and earned Rs 20 lac by selling three to four thousand boxes of tomatoes.

Murthy says that he had heard that farmers in the villages near his home were making a good profit by growing tomatoes. Therefore he thought of growing tomatoes, as he was at home after his betel nut business crashed due to lockdown. He is happy now that he took this decision.

This incident goes on to prove that sitting idle and whiling away time does not help us in any way and if we are prepared to put in hard work that will save us. It also is an example to prove the belief that those who work hard in fields do not face losses.

Despite, the gloom, financial discord, there is a ray of opportunity for those who hold agricultural land !!! Those few who have acumen will certainly reap a golden harvest, in this period of calamity !!!! There is a silver lining in every dark cloud !!!! The wise will flourish while the foolish perish !!!

What hurts me most is that our youth used to be busy loitering around their colleges at bus stops and cafes with their friends instead of doing something productive. A common sight outside famous colleges in Mangalore.

This is called the love that one have for his mother country. If a person wish, he can work hard and look after their aged parents in his home country. But some people just like to work alike slaves in other countries.

Even I surprised. How people can leave their home country which gave them so much and go to a place where there is no job security, no respect, no insurance. Whenever there is a problem they beg with Indian Govt to help.

Actually this not fair also. People get free education in their home country. Once they get qualified they leave the country and work like slave for development of other country. Not even pay a single rupee tax here. And leave their aged parents here without any support. Money is not everything. Parents, family, friends matters.

Sir , its their choice if they want to go let them go. India is sadly becoming known for communal violences , rape etc. Moreover inability to find jobs is another issue. Dont be a pricky and blind patriot by saying that , it just makes you a patriotic fool. You are the one who questions about others going abroad and at the same time you keep complaining about how the ruling govt has made life hell for you in india. Dont forget the foreign remittance which majorly contributes to the indian economy. I dont like to say this but i feel life is better for me here , than it was in india. I can roam wherever i want without being judged and bothered. I dont get the same privilege in india. Peopll

Its their choice. You dont always have to poke your patriotic ideologies into others. Sir do you even know the figures of the foreign remittances that india gets?

That too contributes towards the indian economy . You are the people who keep complaining about life in india every now and then. And the govt turned a blind eye towards their own people living outside. When they were desperate to seek help because of their poor financial condition, the govt turned a blind eye and charged them high fares. It was so worse than uae charter planes took it to the air just to help them go back to their home country.Be a patriot , not a blind patriot.

Mr lobo your comments completely treat as outcasts . We are indians too , contributing to the country through foreign remittances. No matter what we return back to India, our mother country. But what if we study so much and get paid so less even after having these many years of education. I was so underpaid , whereas i got a good offer in dubai, safety assured, respect from others, mingling with other nationalities including pakistanis( dont call me antinational now) . As an india i will always respect my fellow indians , but when some people like you treat as outcasts , it just makes us feel sad. Dont judge and hate on others like this . Spread positivity and happiness .

I am not against people migrating from their home country. But they should take their parents also with them.

Every time this point raised by someone, people justify by saying about foreign remittance. If this is correct, then Govt would have encouraged people to go to gulf to work.

Remittance done from gulf is peanuts. 10 small export oriented firms can earn more foreign exchange than what we get from entire gulf region. Please don't fool people.

Guru, nri's have contributed above $ 69 billion for the last 3 years, thats almost 25% less than the hwole govt expenditure plan. I understand your points on leaving family , which is very bad. However my parents live with me in dubai. I know there are many instances where grown ups leave their parents and go just for the money. I respect that opinion of yours. But in the recent years nri's are always put down, and we are always potrayed in a wrong way. Everyone works for money, we iffer our services and get paid in return . Moreover people always talk about we dont contribute to the economy . We do in the form of remittances. I checked the figures on net , i suggeeat you to do the same while raising a point. Regardless of all that i agree your point on how people leave their old aged parents just so that they get a better life. Leave them, they are selfish and moroever we dont have to poke our nose into everyone's decisions, sometimes we have to see what is going on within our own backyard .

While hard work is essential ingradient of success, we need to be guardedly optimistic. This time tomato Retail prices were around Rs 70 per kg, while in the past the retail prices during this time were less than Rs 10 per kg. Farmers could not even recover their cost of produce.
Please don't go by the logic of Jackpot. Only one wins, others lose. Don't jump the bandwagon. Do your homework properly.

Tomatoes, onions etc give some good returns to some lucky farmers..
Their time to enter market is also very important. When there's low supply, some farmers definitely make money.. but indeed luck required...

Quote "This incident goes on to prove that sitting idle and whiling away time does not help us in any way and if we are prepared to put in hard work that will save us" unquote.

There is one woman who is Ph.D in Indore, who is selling vegetables on a cart. There are thousands of Engineers, graduates, postgraduates, MBAs and Ph.Ds who are working under MGNREGA scheme in Uttar Pradesh and getting Rs 190 for a day's 8 hours hard labour work on infrastructure projects. Probably, most of these people may have done like this man, had they had 3 ares of spare land and 2-3 lakh rupees in hand. It is nice for Mr. Murthy, but many of my friends in Mangalore and Mumbai have tried agriculture growing vegetables, tomatoes and carrying on other business and only 5% of them succeeded and 95% lost their capital. There is cut throat competition in business.

ToMaTos - PoToTos ..Onion, Wheat, Rice . Sugar are essentials commodities ..every single day at least 3 times /day.....Needs price control.. So that poor can survive...

NOTE: Anyone can bring the price down anytime.. if they grow tomatos plants( Just less than 12 plants) in your backyard/front yard.. (Of course.. I do the same in every summer....-Water the plants in the late evening to cool down in almost 12 hours night time..)
Apt people.. you can grow small plants in your Balcony in small pots....that works..
As long as NO EXCUSE reasons.... you have Tomatos right in your backyard..
