Bengaluru: Syllabus reduction by 30 per cent - Orders within a week

Bengaluru, Jul 24: Sources in the education department said that on the model of CBSE, the syllabus of students from Class 1 to 10 in the state will also be reduced by 30 per cent and the order in this connection would be issued in about a week.

As per the suggestions made by a committee of experts, lessons that have been repeated have been deleted and the revision details have been provided to the education department by Karnataka Textbook Society. The lessons have been pruned in such a way that the students learn a thing only once during their 10 years of learning. The department will officially announce the lessons that have been pruned down, sources stated.

Schools which were to begin this academic year in June have not yet been functional because of coronavirus spread. Two months have already been lost, and it does not look like they will start for two more months. Therefore, 30 per cent cut has been affected, said managing director of Textbook Society, Madegowda. He said that the report prepared by experts has been sent to the commissioner in the department and the government will take a final call on the issue.

The sources in the department also said that discussions need to be held with the secondary school examination board which holds SSLC examination and the two have to coordinate Those lessons where main questions are raised, and subjects which have to be compulsorily learnt would be retained and the remaining syllabus will be cut down, they added.

    So education experts admit that 30 % of the portion was not important after all ? Groom students to be curious, inquisitive and to think outside the box - not rote learning robots.

    Once my child was reading loudly the topic on geography where she was trying to memorise area, population of the Countries near to digits. Even grains produced by those countries near to metric tons. What is the accuracy of such numbers? What is the utility of such figures? When I visited that country later, I was shocked to find out that those grains were no more of any significance to that country.
    I hope our so called experts drop such topics into the thrash bins while rationalising the syllabus this time.

    Children are already suffering because of this Pandemic & are not familiar with E-Learning.
    50 % reduction in Syllabus would be Ideal ...

    I totally agree here... .Also I need to add further..The fees also should be reduced Minimum by 30percent. The reason being - the water and electricity cost of the schools now is bare minimum, The maintenance cost is also almost NIL. The staff Salaries also will be not paid in full as far as I believe as every where there is half salary which has become a sort of trend,,, I strongly request all the parents to come further and raise your voice and see to it that we raise an alarm on the unjust fees structure. There is no unity among the parents cos of few parents who pocket the school management thus cannot raise their voice. Also the concerned authority should pass a bill to reduce the fees at least by 30 percent. Hope this message goes to the right ears. Thank you.

    Rightly said Mr. Edward, i would say school management should reduce the fees from 30 to 40% . Even last year students have missed so many classes due to heavy rain and even final exams was cancelled due to Covid, we cannot expect the school to refund what fees we have paid in full for last year but atleast they can reduce for this year. My kids school is charging the same fee for even this year though the school has not reopened or neither they is any online classes. Let govt take this matter for consideration.
