Udupi: ASHA worker operates auto rickshaw at 3 am to hospitalise pregnant woman

Udupi, Jul 24: Rajeevi, an accredited social health activist (ASHA) working as a corona warrior, exemplified her duty consciousness by driving an auto rickshaw at 3 am on Thursday July 23 in order to admit a pregnant woman into a hospital.

Rajeevi is attached to Pernankila health centre. A pregnant woman living in her jurisdiction suffered from labour pain at 3 am on Thursday. As soon as she got a call from a family member of the lady, Rajeevi drove her auto rickshaw and admitted the lady into the government women and child hospital at Udupi, which is located 20 km away. The woman gave birth to a baby girl at 12 pm and both the child and the mother are hale and healthy.

Rajeevi is from Sullia. She has been living in Pernankila after her marriage. She is active in activities of the Stree Shakti self-help group of Dharmasthala Rural Development Project. She owns two auto rickshaws, one of which has been rented out. She has been providing free travel to pregnant women visiting hospitals for delivery. Rajeevi, who has been serving the society in addition to attending to her duties conscientiously, has come in for lavish appreciation also in the social media.

Rajeevi works at an ASHA worker till the evening. She provides auto rickshaw services for ladies thereafter till 9 pm. As the area where she lives in has very few bus services, every evening, she ensures that women from Pernankila area reach their homes safely. She is also an ambassador for the Swachh Bharat Mission for Pernankila gram panchayat.

Rajeevi began to drive an auto rickshaw in the year 2000. From 2009, she has been working as an ASHA worker, said Lohith Kamath, a local, who was with Rajeevi when the said incident happened on Thursday.
