Belagavi, Jul 23: In an incident which happened on Wednesday July 22, angry relatives of a patient infected with coronavirus, who died in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) here, gave vent to their anger by vandalizing the place and setting an ambulance on fire. The incident happened near the COVID ward of BIMS.
The person who tested positive for corona infection had been brought here in an ambulance from Athani. He was admitted into the ICU and was being treated. But he breathed his last there without responding to treatment.
As soon as they came to know that the patient had died, his relatives of the patient gathered in front of the hospital and raised hue and cry. Developing cold feet at the sight of the agitated crowd, ambulance driver and nurses rushed into the hospital building. The infuriated mob then tried to attack the doctors. The crowd then attacked a police vehicle and smashed the window glasses of cars parked there. They also entered some wards and vandalized the places. The police succeeded in dousing the flames of the ambulance which was burning, and dispersing the crowd.
Deputy commissioner of the district M G Hiremath, superintendent of police Laxman Nimbargi, police commissioner Tyagaraj, and zilla panchayat chief executive officer Rajendra, visited the spot and undertook scrutiny.
