Mangaluru: Man tests corona-positive at Wenlock, negative at private hospitals; house sealed down

Mangaluru, Jul 22: A man, a resident of Muttoor village in Ganjimutt, has shared his experience with Daijiworld media of getting different results for coronavirus test in Wenlock and other private hospitals.

The man in question had been to a private hospital as he had severe headache. He was asked to get himself tested for Covid in Wenlock as it is the Covid designated hospital in Mangaluru. Accordingly, he went to Wenlock and got himself tested for Covid and his report turned out to be positive.

In order to confirm the test report from Wenlock, the man went to a private hospital for a second test and surprisingly gets a negative report. As he got confused with the positive report for coronavirus in Wenlock and negative in private, he got himself tested for Covid for the third time in another private hospital. There again his result turns out to be negative.

The concerned person got himself admitted to a private hospital to get treatment for his headache. However, as Wenlock gave positive report for his Covid test, the district authorities resorted to sealing down his house at Muttoor village of Ganjimutt. Though the man requested the district authorities that his report turned negative in two private hospitals, they did not pay heed and sealed his house.

Sharing his experience over phone, the person who underwent the ordeal said, "My health condition was okay. I went to a private hospital to get treated for my headache. As per protocol they asked me to go to Wenlock and test for Covid. The report turned out to be positive. When I got myself tested in private hospital for second opinion it turned out to be negative. For further confirmation I got checked for the third time in a private hospital and the report again turned out to be negative.

"I got admitted to the private hospital to treat my headache. However, the district authorities went to my house and said that as my report is positive, the house will be sealed and asked our neighbours not to visit our house. When I tried to contact the Wenlock hospital doctor, my calls go unanswered. I do not know what needs to be done. I doubt that in Wenlock they just conduct the test for the sake of it. This creates enormous problems for poor people. I have informed the matter to MLA Dr Bharath Shetty also. But the panchayat officials at Ganjimutt are refusing to remove the seal down in the area, which has affected our neighbours also.

"I suspect the genuineness of the Covid test that is done in Wenlock hospital. Many others might have suffered due to this kind of wrong report. I request the concerned authorities to take off the seal down placed on my house and nearby area based on the positive report of Covid test that was carried out at Wenlock hospital,” he said.

Daijiworld media is also coordinating with the concerned authorities to resolve the issue of sealing down of the house of the man, who will be discharged from the private hospital for headache related ailment on Thursday.

    One important question that comes to mind is how the patient, who tested positive in Wenlock, was allowed to venture out of COVID19 premises, against strict protocol, and go to a private lab, twice, for retesting?

    In this context, if one remembers a poor boy who had gone for fever treatment to Wenlock was detained inside for being COVID19 +ve; he subsequently escaped from the hospital for which a big publicity was made in the media & an arrest order was issued as if he was a big criminal; the police tracked him down near State Bank w/o a ₹ in his pocket & again detained in the restricted CCC of Wenlock; the policemen who tracked him were given appreciation letter by their bosses & the news was much circulated & applauded by the public as if a dreaded gangster was caught! No news of his fate after that!

    In this scenario, one wonders as to whether the COVID19 +ve protocol is only for the ignorant & marginalised???

    Please note that false positive rate is 3% for Covid test according to the FDA. Subsequent 2 tests were negative means seal down is not required.

    The best solution for this is to check for viral antibodies in this patient's blood after a stipulated period of time, which will prove who is right & who's wrong!

    BTW, I have my own doubts of the checking done in the govt hospital!
    Also, it's surprising that doctors send patient's with symptoms such as pure headache directly for Corona test!

    Creates a doubt that half of Corona story is dubious & many people are dying out of intense fear than the viral attack itself!

    One of our relative working in UAE was an asymptomatic Covid carrier and tested positive during random check in his Company. After 48 hrs his second test result turned to be negative.
    The above person who first tested in Wenlock Hospital might had very low virus load in his body and was tested positive. Within few hours virus load would have been further reduced to be detected in Covid test. Hence the second test in private hospital was negative. Here no one can be blamed.

    There are so many possibilities and this report needs to be investigated properly before making it a big news. It is also not fare to blame the Govt Wenlock Hospital unless issue is clearly known.
    1.The timing of sample collection is also important because the amount of virus present in the nasopharynx varies over the course of infection. Ideally, samples should be collected near the time of symptom onset to achieve the highest test sensitivity. Patients who are infected but not yet symptomatic may have false-negative test results, as may those whose symptoms are waning.
    2. False positive results: Different values of the sensitivity of RT-PCR tests to COVID-19 have been reported in different parts of the globe. According to one analysis in China, up to 29% of people with the coronavirus tested negative. Studies in the US returned multiple values – sometimes it was 95%, sometimes 85%, and even 75%. If the sensitivity of one RT-PCR test kit is 90%, for example, and two successive negative test results are used to declare someone free of disease, there is still a 1% chance that a person with the disease would be declared negative.
    3. There is also another possibility, what was the time gap between these three tests. Are these reports available or it is a story told over the phone? The virus doesn't remain in the body for ever. 30 percent become negative by two weeks, 68 percent by three weeks 88 percent by four weeks and 95 percent by 33 days. if he had no symptoms it was possible that he was tested as the virus was clearing from his body.
    4. Finally, the district health authorities should take this matter seriously and find out whether this complaint is genuine. The tests are free at Govt Wenlock Hospital where as these cost about Rs 4000/= at private laboratories. Is this a story created by some of the private labs to increase their business? The authorities should investigate and public should be informed what exactly is the cause.

    I too have read that and I fully endorse it.
    Please reply how a false positive report benefits the people who test them? It is not the 'DOCTORS' who are sitting and testing, it is the technicians. There is possibilities of human error. One or two wrong reports can not say that the lab is wrong. If they intentionally give positive to a negative person by manipulating the reports, what is the benefit if some one is put in home isolation? Human errors happen even in reporting histopathological reports related to Cancer. In such cases if there are doubts repeat tests are done.
    More over in this test there are possibilities of false positive and false negative.

    Let all medical staff in Wenlock test from the same equipment and see the result. If found all positive then get tested from couple of private hospital equipment. If found negative then report the case to state health minister and union health minister for supplying substandard and cheap equipment.

    What test did Wenlock did? and whats the kind of tests did the provate hospitals do?
    RT-PCR tests are gold standard to find out if the person has covid virus.
    Other rapid tests are not. Compare apples to apples.
    Sero/Antigen tests will only tell if the person has been infected with covid only after 3 to 4 weeks once exposed to covid.

    Those testing machines should be calibrated from time to time.
    Positive means it should show positive at all the hospitals..
    Otherwise test kit fault at some place...

    Now MLA, Dr. Bharath Shetty should take initiative to solve this problem. Mistakes happen, and second opinion is taken in most of the time. But, for the sake of general public it is necessary to find, why Wenlock made that mistake, or is it Wenlock that erred or the pvt hospitals.
