Mangaluru, Jul 19: Total lockdown has been imposed across the district for the third time this month on Sunday July 19.
Amid the rising number of coronavirus cases, the state government had decided to impose total lockdowns every Sunday beginning July 5.
The streets of the city were empty and all shops except those selling essential items like milk and groceries downed their shutters. Pharmacies are functioning normally, while markets are closed.
Strict police security has been deployed to ensure that people follow the lockdown norms. Only those with valid reasons or passes were allowed to commute.
The Sunday lockdown comes amidst week-long lockdown in Dakshina Kannada and other parts of the state since July 16. During the week, people are allowed to shop for essentials like groceries and medicines between 8 am and 11 am. However, this relaxation has been scrapped for Sunday lockdown. In other words, the curfew which was placed from 11 am on Saturday will be relaxed on Monday at 8 am.
On Saturday July 18, Dakshina Kannada reported another steep spike with 237 coronavirus cases. Altogether, 3,311 cases have been reported till date, out of which 1,848 are currently active. As many as 1,387 persons have recovered and been discharged, and 75 deaths have occurred so far including four on Saturday. Twelve of the deceased are from other districts.
