Kasargod, Jul 18: An aged lady from Uppala lost her life due to coronavirus infection. The health department said that she happens to be the first coronavirus casualty in the district.
A person from the town, conducting business at Hubballi, had died on July 7. But his name has not been included in the list of COVID fatalities from the district. Therefore, the lady from Uppala has been considered as the first ever person from the district to have lost life due to coronavirus, the health department officials stated.

The woman was from Hidayat Nagar, Uppala. She was 74. She was being treated at Kannur Medical College Hospital for coronavirus infection since July 11. She was suffering from acute respiratory complications.
The lady's death happened on Friday July 17 night. Seven other members of her family also have tested positive for corona. They were diagnosed with this infection on Thursday. Six among them are children, but so far, the source of their infection could not be found.
The district was able to contain spread of coronavirus infection during the first two phases. But in the third phase, community spread is being witnessed.
A resident of Mogral Puthur here conducting business at Hubballi had reached the general hospital here on July 7 but his life could not be saved. He was brought in as critical condition to the town from Hubballi. Test performed later on him had confirmed that he was COVID positive. But he had not been admitted in any of the hospitals here for treatment. Therefore, the health department stated, his name was not included in the list of corona victims from the district.
The number of infected persons in the district had crossed 50 on July 12. Most of them had acquired the infection due to contact with infected persons. On Friday July 17, 32 new corona infection cases were detected. As many as 23 among them were infected due to contact with other infected persons.
The district so far has seen 818 confirmed coronavirus cases. In the third phase alone, 640 have acquired the infection. Out of them, 194 got the infection due to primary contact.
As many as 505 persons have been healed of the infection, and 313 continue to be treated in the district.
