Toddler killed in NYC shooting

New York, Jul 14 (IANS): A one-year-old boy was killed during a shooting incident in New York City, authorities said.

On Monday, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said that two men opened fire on a group of people who were having a cookout outside a playground in Brooklyn at around 11.30 p.m. on Sunday, reports Xinhua news agency.

The victim, identified as Davell Gardner, was shot in the stomach while sitting in a stroller.

He died in the hospital later.

Three others were also injured during the shooting but are expected to survive, according to the NYPD.

The suspects are still at large, and their motives are unclear, police said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio mourned the death of Gardner on Monday's briefing with a moment of silence.

"It's heartbreaking for so many reasons and it begins with the fact that there are so many guns out there, and that's a New York tragedy and a national tragedy," said de Blasio.

"We have to heal. We have to bring our police and communities together. We have so much to do," he added.

The city experienced another violent week with 43 shooting incidents, an increase of 231 per cent compared with the same week in 2019, according to NYPD database.
