India needs 'a Manmohan Singh': Sharad Pawar

Mumbai, Jul 12 (IANS): Given the current financial crisis, India needs an economic expert like former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar said here on Sunday.

Pawar recalled how he was a Union minister when Singh was the Finance Minister and the country was passing through a financial crisis in the early 1990s.

"However, it was Manmohan Singh who gave the country a new direction and pulled the country out of the economic problems. For this I give full credit to Manmohan Singh, and also (then Prime Minister) P.V. Narasimha Rao. Today, the country needs him (Singh). I feel Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saheb should take the initiative to seek help of economists. I am confident the country will support him," said Pawar.

The NCP chief urged Modi to confabulate with knowledgeable people from different parties, take the help of whosoever possible or feasible, take everybody along, as in the Prime Minister's current set-up, "there are some persons who have no such experience."

Pawar's comments came in the second instalment of his marathon interview with ‘Saamana' and ‘Dopahar Ka Saamna' Group Executive Editor and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.

Asked whether he had discussed the current scenario with the current Finance Minister (Nirmala Sitharaman), Pawar, 79, replied in the negative.

"No. I never met her even once, nor had any discussions with her. At times of financial crisis confronting such a big country with a huge population there are many challenges, and a dialogue with others (parties) is necessary, but that's not happening now," the NCP supremo said.

In this context he pointed out he had observed persons like Pranab Mukherji, P. Chidambaram and Manmohan Singh spending hours with experts and leaders of other political parties, seeking their suggestions as India is a huge country with diverse viewpoints.

"I don't know if something similar is happening now. If its being done, there has to be some outcome of that, which is not visible," Pawar said, implying that a political dialogue at the national level seems to be missing.

Dwelling on questions pertaining to security vis-a-vis India's neighbours, Pawar said that "when we think of the enemy, the first name that crops up is Pakistan."

"But we should not worry about Pakistan. In the long-term, it is China that is detrimental to India's interests, it is 10 times more powerful than us militarily, it has systematically created all this after years of planning, vision and programmes besides economic strength to act against us. China is the real worry and poses a bigger threat to India," Pawar asserted.

Recounting his meeting as Defence Minister with the Chinese Premier at a private sea resort in that country, Pawar said at the time (over 25 years ago), China was only concerned about giving a challenge to the USA and Japan.

"When I asked him what China's policy vis-a-vis its neighbours, he said they were not thinking of them, maybe after around 25 years. Today, that danger has arisen, China is economically strong. Now, its target is India. Modi became friends with President Xi Jinping, hugged and shook hands, sat on a swing, gave gifts. An impression was conveyed that we have achieved something big with this camaraderie. But problems between two countries cannot be solved in such a manner, now we realise that," Pawar pointed out.

On the tendency of the BJP government to blame Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi for all problems related to China and Pakistan, Pawar said we must also consider the situation whereby all our neighbours like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are now siding with China. "These sullied relations are the contribution of the present times".

He felt that instead of hitting back, the Centre should exert global pressure on China through diplomatic channels and negotiations and resolve pending issues like the Galwan valley clash.

Pawar also touched upon various other issues pertaining to the lockdown and how Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's government has fared well in the first half and is working hard.

The Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar has repeated what BJP MP Subramaniah Swami has said in his interview to 'Zee News'. It is who openly acknowledged that there is no one better economist in India than former PM Manmohan Singh.

But today in PM Modi's 'Good governance' is handled by leaders who hardly understand economy of the nation. That is why BSNL, MTNL, Air India, Indian Railways, HAL, HMT, Government paper mills, Banks are getting shutdown and hundreds and millions of experienced staff are loosing jobs.

The PM Modi's only interest is too remain in power as long he breath his last. Neither his government is bothered about settling border aggression nor providing job, food, health security to the nation.
Only Prime Minister of the world with 'PM Care Fund' really cares for his citizens of this nation.

Whatever the Maharshtra strong man said is true from his vast experience, lifting India from economic crisis of 90's and made it to march towards progress undoubtedly goes to Dr Manmohan Singh. We need experts like him to take India towards progress and prosperity.

"History will judge me differently" are the words of Dr Manmohan Singh and it has come true ever since the NDA messed up the national economy with its Demonetisation, GST, unprepared Lockdowns, messing up of international relations with our friendly neighbours and flattening of the GDP curve instead of the COVID 19 curve. Instead of learning lessons from their blunders, the NDA Government is still harping on bringing down opposition governments, and harassing NGOs like RGF etc.

    sense_Shetty,

I agree with you fully. If the leader has vision and think about the future of youth then such leader will not do gimmicks or hollow speeches. He will create jobs and silently concentrate on strengthening of economy, new technology. He will not take refuge of his incapabilities by blaming our forefathers.

He will not enjoy with public money touring the world without any value addition to the country. He will not spend huge sums of money for imported gadgets, expensive clothing and imported food for self. He will not lie after lie to fool the public.

He will not destabilise democratically elected state governments with huge sums of money. On the contrary he will spend such money in the development.

MMS will remain in the main pages of Indian history for his contribution in the development of our motherland and no lies can take away this credit from him.

    Emergency ..
Don't make hollow allegations ..Please prove it in court of law.The opposition can go to court if it feels there is injustice..
The democratically elected govt in karnataka did not have clear majority ..they did not have peoples mandate ..despite their performance was dented due to infighting ..I dread think about Indias plight during this time of Covid, china agression ..India would have been slaves of pakistan and china ..if not for modi and his leadership ..Please give it your unbiased thought ..dont just hate him because of your concern of your own identity as a minority ..
We have seen what the congress did during Mumbai attacks ..or during chinas invasion of aksai chin .. and the war in 1965 ..they do not have guts ..See now ..how Modi is responding to china ..it has sent troops to the border as a response to chinas agression ..unlike salman kurshid who went to china and praised china during their aggression under their govt..
You need to wake up ..come out of your myopic view of India within the prism of your community and religion.

    sense_Shetty,

You have pointed out a importance of leaders with a vision for India and its youth. Each Indian need to think on the same lines for the development of our country and elect the leader with vision.

We had seen many revolutions in the past which included Green revolution, White revolution, Communication and Electronic revolution, Economic revolution and our self reliance in Electricity, Gas, Space and many more. This changed the thinking of youth in India and created lot jobs which we are enjoying even today.

But I have neither seen or experienced anything on such vision in the last seven years. Can you please throw some light on this.

    Sense Shetty,

India has not lost any war with Pakistan.

Till 1947 British Indian Army was offensive army. But during the time he was not given important to Armed forces. He was too pacifist ( this was his blunder ). But his daughter never given any chance.
She converted back Indian Armed forces into OFFENSIVE rather than defensive.
She is behind India's FIRST atom bomb test Operation Smiling Buddha....She was given covert permission to further develop/produce Nuclear Weapons/ Missiles...She is responsible of permanent partition of Pakistan with Bangladesh. One hidden truth is that she even decided to further attack and partition Pakistan as Baluchistan , Punjab and Sindh during Indo-Pak war. But due to heavy pressure from USA ( God father of Pakistan ) , she could not do it. She is responsible for creation of India's premier Intelligence Agency RAW which was weakened by Morarji Desai.

    Rathan,

Modi has been searching for the looted money since seven years and finally he has zeroed in on Gandhi family's charity funds accounts. No mention about Jay Shah's 800% rise in assets, the reason for making him a member of BCCI board, no mention of funds received by BJP party nor RSS party accounts. Neither a mention of various Hindu charity funds accounts.'

No problem bhayya, search and search. People will not repeat their mistakes of voting again if the PM keeps prolonging to fulfill his promises.

Most of us believe in gossip and publicity and do not deserve the qualified and capable people like MMS. We are like animals in the circus and the ringmaster tells to dance to his tunes and we are happy with it. Even if the country suffers no problem, but we still believe in lies.

Only those concerned about the country remember the contribution of MMS and know his worth. For others one individual is important even if the country is doomed. They still feel that the man doing HARIKATHE is the HARi himself.

Till we have this type of thinking, we cannot bounce back to the earlier glory.

Of course, without an iota of doubt, a country as large as India needs a well experienced and competent Finance Minister and there is no better person that Dr. Manmohan Singh. The present so called Finance Minister, Nirmala is just a spokesperson of the BJP. She holds press conferences to convey the decisions of the person calling the shots in the present government. It is Modi who is the minister of all departments. The others are just sycophants to lick his shoes and tie its laces. With all respects to him, Modi has been a fiasco.
