Udupi, Jun 19: In a sad news on Friday, June 19, Udupi recorded its second death due to novel coronavirus.
The victim is a 54-year-old man, a resident of Thekatte. The person had come from Mumbai on Thursday June 18 and was under quarantine. He had arrived from Mumbai on Thursday afternoon with four others. During check-up at the district receiving centre, no symptoms were found and were hence sent for home quarantine.
The person died all of a sudden as per sources. His swab sample tested positive for coronavirus.
The information was revealed at Kundapur in a press meet by deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha.
“A 54-year-old man that was one among four people who had arrived in Thekkatte from Mumbai on Thursday, June 18 has died today. A swab test of his throat confirmed that he died of Covid-19. With his death, the number of people who have died of the virus in the district has gone up to two,” he said.
He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Selco Kiosk’ solar unit for collecting throat swabs donated by Bharathiya Vikas Trust, Manipal in Kundapur taluk health department office on Friday evening.
“The deceased had gone for home quarantine after testing his body temperature at local centre. His condition became critical in the evening and he died. The house will be declared cantonment zone and the area will be declared buffer zone. His post-mortem report is awaited,” he said.
“Among 1,039 infected cases detected in the district so far, 92 cases are active. Among them 755 cases were reported from Kundapur and Byndoor. Only 59 cases are active among them. Corona warriors in the leadership of the team of Dr Nagabhooshan Udupa, Dr Robert Rebello, Dr Nagesh, Dr K Premananda, Dr Sanman Shetty and others have worked day and night and become a model. Dr G Shanker Hospital in Kundapur will be converted as fully fledged Covid-19 hospital installing Oxygen, Ventilator and other facilities,” said the deputy commissioner.
“The sickness can be cured if medical treatment is provided soon after the symptoms are found. Therefore those who arrived from outside, should mandatorily follow government guidelines and they should not delay going to fever clinics and get themselves examined if the symptoms are found,” he requested.
“The kiosk has increased the confidence of Covid-19 warriors. The unit to collect throat swabs was started under the guidance of taluk medical officer Dr Nagabhooshan in the past. There are plans to start more mobile units in the future as per suggestions from the government,” he said.
Revenue sub divisional officer K Raju, Selco zonal general manager Guruprasad Shetty, Bharathiya Vikas Trust CEO Manohar K, Taluk health officer Dr Nagabhooshan Udupa, Dr Robert Rebello and Dr Nagesh were present.
It may be recalled, the district had reported its first death due to coronavirus on May 14. It was a 54-year-old man who had arrived from Maharashtra on May 5. He was admitted to KMC Manipal on May 13. He died on May 14 after he suffered a heart attack. As a suspected coronavirus case, the patient's swab sample was sent for testing. The report result came as positive on May 16.
