Mangaluru: Strict action against schools demanding fees, warns DDPI

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Jun 11: Following the ongoing pandemic, schools across the state were earlier asked not to force parents of students who were unable to pay the school fees. However, repeated complaints on schools demanding parents to pay fees have been surfacing. Responding to the situation, the deputy director of public instruction (DDPI) has laid down a strict warning to schools taking this step.

"As per government circular, school fees cannot be collected from parents who are unable to or refusing to pay it until further orders. Schools should not exert any type of pressure on parents concerning payment of school fees. If complaints of throwing out students for non-payment of school fees are received, stern disciplinary action will be taken against the schools under the Right to Education Act," warned Dakshina Kannada DDPI in a press release to private schools.

"Several complaints via calls are being received by the deputy commissioner and deputy director of public instruction over private schools collecting school fees. All the private schools in the district have been informed that they cannot exert any pressure on parents regarding payment of school fees. If complaints are registered against such schools, severe action will be taken under the Right to Education Act for the wrongdoing. The schools will be reported to district education control authority," the DDPI warned.

No School, No fee until the situation gets back to normal in the country. We don't want to risk the lives of our kids. Months or a year may get wasted, no problem but not to take any risk with the lives. Let the schools re open next year, hopefully there will be a 💉 vaccination by the end of this year.

    Dear valued readers,
I'm following the news on TV as well as various newspapers about the ongoing protests by parents about the payment of fees to schools and colleges in the wake of closure of educational institutions. Definitely most parents may feel that when teaching / learning is not taking place Why should we parents pay the school/college fees?It is but national to evoke this feeling of resentment against the school. But,Dear parents, please think twice if this negative thinking arises in your mind. Most of the educational institutions are private and are purely managing on fees from students to pay their staff salaries. Deprived fees means denial of salary to staff. I'm a professional educated teacher who worked in the gulf for 23 years .At that time the school too suffered deficit due to outbreak of H1N1.All education institutions were closed for 2 months. Very few parents cooperated to pay the fees and thus teachers salaries were affected. Kindly think of the teachers and their families when there is a pandemic like this.

    Loraine,

Your comment is true. But just think Corona is affected globally, lets forget global now and think only of India. Many of them are jobless today and some are working just for 50% salary. I am also salaried person and you know we are already working with 30% deduction with effect from May and do not know till when this will continue. So what my conclusion is this pandemic is not only affected teachers but to all humans, irrespective of their work. So when individual is paid less he/she will obviously think twice before spending on something. So better, institutions should not ask the payment for 1st quarter or should decrease the amount. And to be frank parents pay the fees for their kids good education and not for any other reason.

Again you have thought only of urself. None of you parents discussing to reduce fee... You out rightly refuse to pay fees. Why this injustice to teachers to work on zero salary when you at least receive 30 percent... You are talking as if the teaching and non teaching staff going on world tour with the fees... Don't they have families to take care of and their children fees to pay. Selfish attitude... Truly only bothered about yourself....

    Anit,

First of all read my comment correctly. It's written no fees or atleast need to reduce fees for first quarter. You can't take full fees like before. Yes this shows selfish attitude of not only us salaried people but also you who thinks only from your angle.

Just spare a thought on who will pay the poor teachers, how are they supposed to survive without salary or half salary and also expected to now take remote classes on daily basis, this is not easy. Even if the school collects fees, are they ensuring teachers are paid their salaries? Is the govt. doing anything about this. All arguments of fees agreed, but who is thinking about teachers? What if this situation continues for many more months. Teachers need not be victims of media trial. This is a pandemic situation, As a society we should collectively think and act repsonsibily in the best interest of everyone.. This matter is surely not as easy as debated in the news room..

I believe most schools are aided through grants. Teachers salaries to a large extent are supported through grants.

I welcome the warning from DDPI of strict action against the schools demanding fees but at the same time wee have to keep a eagle's eye to monitor who will follow, implement and adhere to this warning. This warning has come only after ascertaining the ineffectiveness of education ministry and minister. When there is a uncertainty about the re-opening of schools, colleges and other educational institutions because of covid-19,how come one can demand or pressurize parents of the students to pay their fees.Is it the way to run the educational institutions by the concerned ministry. This is ridiculous.
When whole world is experiencing the pinch of Covid-19,our Karnataka government is worried about the re-opening of educational institutions, giving on-line education at the cost of student's health. Our education minister is changing his statements every now and then.He can not take his decision of his own and he has to rely on others. It is very shameful.Demanding fees from the parents of students at this critical, difficult period that too without opening the schools is inhumane.

Considering the difficulties of poor parents is understandable.
But Govt should pay on behalf of students to school, since they are collecting TAXES even in Lockdown.
Otherwise how the Schools / it's employees will survive?
Let the Govt lead by own example by not collecting TAXES.

Please teach our education minister to speak logically. You people change your statements every now and then. Education minister every now and then changes his statement. Even schools are confused with your actions.
