Udupi, Jan 26: At the election for the post of the district president of the BJP held at the district office of the party on Monday January 25, Uday Kumar Shetty was declared elected unopposed. His was the only nomination that came up for consideration.
After several rounds of discussions in the recent past, the party leaders had zeroed in on Shetty, a popular leader, who has been the general secretary of the Rashtreeya Yuvamorcha of the party. He is young and dynamic, and belongs to the Bunt community that has a predominant presence in the district.
In the initial stages, former MLA, Sunil Kumar, and Mahila Morcha president Shyamala Kunder, had evinced interest in becoming the district president of the party. Names of zilla panchayat members, Nayana Ganesh, and Katpady Shankar Poojary, also had been making the rounds. Sunil Kumar, who drew allround support, would have emerged as the party candidate as there had been a demand to give this post to a Billava because of the fact that Bunts have been selected in all the assembly constituency BJP committees in the district, but for the opposition expressed by some senior Sangh Parivar leaders, party sources said. Kumar has been promised of a suitable position at the state level, it has been revealed.
Dakshina Kannada MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, functioned as the returning officer for the election. Past district president and MLC, Kota Srinivas Poojary, home minister, V S Acharya, local MP, D V Sadanand Gowda etc., were present. After he was declared having been elected unopposed for the post, the leaders congratulated Uday Kumar Shetty and wished him a highly successful tenure.
