Mumbai, May 22: On Thursday afternoon, May 21, around 2,500 migrant workers intending to board Uttar Pradesh bound trains had to return disappointed after two trains were cancelled at the last minute.
The workers, mostly from the northern suburb slums as per the directions had gathered at a ground in Mahavir Nagar, Kandivali West at around 12 PM on Thursday. The workers were supposed to board three Uttar Pradesh bound Shramik Special trains from Borivali railway station.
In the last minute, as the workers were about to board BEST buses to proceed to the railway station, the Railways informed the police that two trains, one to Gorakhpur and the other to Jaunpur had been cancelled.
Additional commissioner of police, North region, Dilip Sawant said, "We had no option but to hold back the passengers, arrange food and water and send them back after they had eaten." However, the police said that they were yet to information on rescheduling of the cancelled trains.
Around 1000 passengers intended to board the train heading to Pratapgarh were taken to Borivali railway station as scheduled. Sawant said.
