Mumbai, May 21: State drugs authority minister, Rajendra Shingane has appealed the public to donate blood stating that stocks in blood banks in the state would last for another eight to ten days.
On Wednesday, May 20, Shingane held meetings with representatives from blood banks, and masks and PPE kits manufacturers.
The average requirement of blood for Mumbai alone is around 800-900 units. But due to the lockdown, drop in the number of casualty cases especially arising due to accidents have drastically come down and, therefore, the blood requirement has come down. However, there is a requirement for blood for other cases such as cancer or thalassemia.
State Blood Transfusion Council assistant director, Dr Arun Thorat said, "Yet cancer and thalassemia patients need blood routinely and we need to keep stocks ready."
