Bangalore: Biocon Chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw Bats for Bt Brinjal

Bangalore, Jan 19: Bio-technology major, Biocon Ltd’s chairman and managing director Kiran Mazumadar Shaw has extended her strong support for introduction of Bt Brinjal for commercial cultivation in the country as ``biotechnology is a safe science and regulated technology.’’

Addressing a news conference to announce the three-day Bangalore India Bio event, a Karnataka government initiative to be held from June 2 to 4, she said the introduction of Bt Brinjal must be viewed on a scientific basis and not governed by unfounded fears as it would lead to creating needless fear psychosis among the people.

The Bicon chief, who is regarded for her pioneering role in promoting biotechnology on a big scale in the country, said the mass hysteria sparked off by ill-informed people without proper understanding of the various issues was a matter of deep concern.

``We are one of the leading producers of Bt Cotton globally and I think farmers have benefited significantly from this technology,’’ she said.

Biocon CMD said Bt is an optional technology and there is no compulsion for farmers to use this technology.

``The farmers stand to gain by using modern technology. Bt cotton has been a very clear case that farmers have really started increasing the cultivation as and when they found it to be useful and it’s about discovering the use and benefit of this new technology,’’ Mazumdar-Shaw added.

    I AM COMPLETELY SATISFY TO BIOCON'S CMD DR. KIRAN THAT Bt IS AN OPTIONAL TECHNOLOGY &THERE IS NO COMPULSION FOR FARMERS TO USE THIS TECHNOLOGY.IF SOME WILL ADOPT THIS TECHNIQUE IN THEIR STYLE OF FARMING & GET BETTER RESULT IN THE FORM OF GOOD YIELD,OTHER WILL INFLUENCED ON IT & IT MAY BE POSSIBLE THAT A MAJORITY OF FARMER CAN ADOPT THIS TECHNIQUE DURING FARMING.OUR MOTIVE IS TO REACH AT HIGH LEVEL IN THE FIELD OF AGRICULTURE.OUR COUNTRY IS A LAND OF FARMERS IN WHICH MAJORITY OF CITIZENS DO FARMING AS A MAIN JOB.OUR BIOTECHNOLOGIST SHOULD BE A DEVOTEE AND PERFORM THE EXPERIMENT IN THE FAITH OF THE FARMERS.THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF THE BIOTECHNOLOGIST IS TO INCREASE THE YIELD OF THE CROP BY UTILIZING THE ALREADY PRESENT RESOURSES IN OUR SURROUNDING AND ALSO PAY ATTENTION ON THE EFFECT OF OUR RESULT ON THE NATURE.BECAUSE NATURE CREATES ALL THE CREATURE,ALL LIVING AS WELL AS NON-LIVING OBJECT ARE HANDLE BY THE NATURE.TODAY,THERE IS QUITE FLUCTUATION IN CLIMATIC CONDITION CAUSES NATURAL DISASTERS LIKE FLOOD,DROUGHT WHICH HIGHLY INFLUENCED ON THE LIFE OF SURROUNDING LIVING ORGANISM,BUT THIS IS BY NATURE,BUT IF WE WILL EXPERIMENTALLY GET ANY RESULT WHICH CAN SHOW THE EVIL EFFECT ON THE BALANCING CYCLE OF NATURE,OR INTERFARING IN THE NATURAL PHENOMENON THEN, NATURE WILL SHOW THEIR ADVERSE EFFECT AND IT IS SURE THAT NO ONE WILL FACE OUT ITS ADVERSE EFFECT AND THE LIVING BODIES WILL DESTRUCTED IN HUGE OR IN MASS.SO THAT WE SHOULD PERFORM THE EXPERIMENTS SHOULD BE NATURE FRIENDLY.THANK U
