Bantwal, Jan 11: The residents in the neighbourhood of the government school located at Brahmarakootlu on Sunday January 10, complained to the block education officer, about the conversion of a classroom into a prayer room to enable a few Muslim students to offer ‘Namaz’.
The local residents were surprised at the open doors of a classroom at the school on Sunday. When they walked into the classroom, they found mats neatly placed on the floor to allow a few Muslim students to offer prayers.
The people then informed a member of the school committee about the matter, who then brought the issue to the notice of the block education officer.
The locals alleged that the arrangement to offer prayers has been allowed by a Muslim teacher serving in the same school and urged the department to take appropriate action against the erring teacher.
Block education officer Sudhakar confirmed that a meeting had been called on Monday January 11, to clarify matters.
The lone Muslim teacher was advised to follow the secular rules of the government school and not to promote sectarian worship. Meanwhile, the same teacher was cautioned that stern action will be taken against her if she was found to be encouraging such activities in the future.
