Sewri, May 7: A 34-year-old woman was allegedly beaten up by a couple and their relatives after she tried stopping them from getting intimate in a public place.
The incident happened at around 8 pm on May 2, when the woman, Mumtaaz Kadir Shaikh, after distributing food among migrant workers, was returning home.
Shaikh mentioned, in her police complaint, “I was working with my colleague. We were distributing food to workers in our area. After their meal got over, all the co-workers left and I was standing alone outside the plant.”
She stated that she then came across a couple, a 22 year-old-man and a 20-year-old woman getting intimate in public. She said that since the girl stayed in their area, she went up to them and stopped them from getting intimate there. Hearing this, the girl got angry and began abusing her. When the woman abused her back, the man grabbed her neck and began beating her up.
The girl's mother, younger brother and aunt were around the area and came running and joined the man in beating her up, she stated. It was dark and hence, she could not tell where each person hit her. However, she raised an alarm which caused the locals to intervene and stop them from hitting her.
According to the police, once the 5 left the spot, the woman went to JJ hospital. After being treated medically, she called to inform her husband. They went to the Sewri police station and lodged a complaint.
A case has been registered under Sections 141 (unlawful assembly), 143 (punishment), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
