Puttur, Jan 2: Contrary to the meteorological department’s prediction about the receding intensity of the rain, heavy rains drenched Puttur on the New Year Day. The taluk received five cms of rain on January 1. For the first time in the last ten years, the taluk received 37.2 cms of rain in December, the highest in the decade.
The areca nut farmers have become distressed due to the regular and untimely rains. The areca nut crops they have harvested have been laid out for drying, but because of the rains, they are rotting. The black gram crop which is ready for harvesting, also is getting drenched and rotten due to the rains.
On Thursday night, heavy rains that lashed Subrahmanya in Sullia taluk, and surrounding places, left a trail of destruction. Hundreds of areca nut and banana trees got uprooted due to rain and speeding gale. In a few villages, the areca nuts spread in the courtyards got washed away due to the sudden downpour, it is gathered.
