Mangaluru, Apr 9: Maundy Thursday, one of the most important days of the Holy Week marking the culmination of the Lenten season, was observed here on April 9.
The Eucharistic Mass was offered by Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha at Rosario Cathedral in the evening.
A few churches in the diocese of Mangaluru and Udupi, with the necessary permission of the authorities, reached out to their parishioners by broadcasting masses and rituals through local television cable channels, YouTube channels, and living streaming on websites and apps.
Maundy Thursday signifies the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. The day is followed by Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday denoting Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.
Parish priest of Rosario Cathedral Fr J B Crasta and assistant parish priest Flavian Lobo were present with the bishop.
Christians of twin districts celebrated Maundy Thursday rituals from their respective homes due to the lock down that is in effect throughout the country. There was no gathering of believers in churches due to Covid-19 social distance instructions.
Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi diocese offered the Maundy Thursday prayers in the chapel at his residence. Prayers were offered in all churches for mankind that is suffering from Covid-19 pandemic.
