Mangaluru, Mar 31: The deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, who also happens to be the district magistrate, in exercise of powers conferred on him, has noted that movement of citizens including coolies has been restricted in the district under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code.
He said that there have been complaints forcing the coolies residing in houses or sheds in the district to pay rent. A number of them are also forced to move out of their homes or sheds. The deputy commissioner has warned the house and shed owners not to collect rent from coolies for March and April this year. He has also warned of strict legal action if they force the coolies either to pay rent or move out of their homes.
He also has directed the people, construction companies or factories for whom these coolies used to work to provide them food or provisions needed by them and their families. He has warned that in case of non-compliance and if complaints are received, serious action would be taken.
