Kerala CM directs Excise dept to provide liquor to those with doctor's prescription

Daijiworld Media Network - Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 30: In an unprecedented decision taken by Kerala chief minister (CM) Pinarayi Vijayan, taking the number of deaths into consideration due to suicides across Kerala because of non-availability of liquor after all closure of wines shops in the state, directed the state Excise department to provide liquor to those with prescription from doctors.

According to a tweet from ANI, Kerala government has also asked the Excise department to provide free treatment and admit people with withdrawal symptoms to addiction centres. The CM had said that the government is also considering the option of online sale of liquor as the sudden unavailability of alcohol may lead to social problems.

In Karnataka also, several deaths were reported due to suicides by alcohol addicted people. Meanwhile, a fake government order letter was being circulating in the social media. The letter said about Karnataka state directing Excise department to open the wine shops across the state from 2.30 pm to 6 pm daily. State authorities have rejected and termed the circulated letter as fake and no such letter has been issued or no such decision is in line.

Ex-servicemen have been automatically prescribed/rather entitled with certain units of liquor as per their ranks serrved, moreover serving personnel also have been allotted certain quota of liquor. Hence they should be given their quota to effectively carry out the the house arrest envisaged by the government. Ex servicemen have a separate chain of distribution of liquor and moreover they are a disciplined lot. So the central government should allow the distribution as per their entitlement.

I don't know if this is a right decision by the CM. When there is a complete lockdown, alcoholics will have problem when they don't get liquor. I don't think any doctor will suggest to consume alcohol.

Readers, substance abuse, like alcohol, drugs, after prolonged use, results in severe addiction..... An addict will throw tantrums, go berserk, even commit suicide... Kerala, has recorded the highest consumption of alcohol in our nation.... CM Vijayan, is blatantly encouraging more people to consume alcohol... Doctors cannot prescribe alcohol, as it is not a medicine !!!!!

When there are so many prescription medication s available for withdrawal symptoms, no doctor would prescribe alcohol unless he also is interested in having a part of it!

I do not see any Common sense in this request. This will infact not only swell but lead to a burst in Covid19 crisis in Kerala. Is he assuming that if people drink they will have a steady state of mind? People of Kerala its high time you just pay heed to the govt. Non ssensical advice and in turn playing around with your lives. You all need to ask your govt. To plan and prepare immediate medical response teams, labs and make shift hospitals to tend to the rising covid19 patients. Rather than seek permission for medical prescription for giving liquor.
