Mangaluru, Mar 20: St Agnes Pre-University College, Mangaluru, started by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters is a Minority Educational Institution. The Apostolic Carmel Congregation was founded by Venerable Mother Veronica of the Passion in Bayonne, France in 1868 and was established at St Ann’s campus, Mangaluru, in 1870 with the specific goal of empowering women in India.
The Apostolic Carmel Educational Society runs several educational institutes and St Agnes PU College is one among them. Historically, it is the first Catholic women’s college established in South India and the second in the country. The college has students from all communities and denominations. The college is a pioneer in the education of young women and has been at the forefront of a cultural and social renaissance with regard to the rights and roles of women. This has its source and origin in the philosophy and teaching of its founder Mother Aloysia who started St Agnes College in 1920.
A rigorous academic programme is at the core of everything and this is reflected in the consistently high academic results that they garner every year. The fundamental principle that permeates and governs the institution is the motto, ‘God is our Strength’. Therefore, their ardent endeavor is to prepare each student for academic, social and personal success in a constantly evolving globalized environment.
Pre-University education offers unique and multiple challenges for it is a stepping stone to any professional course a student may choose to opt for and it has to also prepare them in a limited time for various competitive examinations. IITians and doctors by ‘Vividhya’ having vast teaching experience provide comprehensive and quality coaching to prepare our students to answer NEET, JEE and CET examinations. Professionally qualified individuals meticulously groom students to answer the CA Foundation Course, CS, CSAT (a foundation course for Civil Service Examinations), and CLAT exams. Coaching in the regular syllabus is also provided. The college provides ample facilities and infrastructure for the development of an integrated personality. Students often feel perplexed and are unsure when it comes to choosing the right combination of subjects that will help them find their true calling. To make things easier for them, the college offers different combinations in Science, Commerce and Arts with the firm conviction that this dynamic environment will equip them to face the unforeseen challenges of the future with equanimity. With this in mind we have introduced ‘Artistique’ and ‘Mindificent’ certificate courses designed to complement the Arts and Commerce curriculum respectively. Well-ventilated and spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a library, a sprawling playground, a verdant and serene campus are all part of its legacy spanning 100 years of excellence in teaching.
Student societies and clubs play a vital role in enhancing the holistic and aesthetic development of a student’s personality. Classroom teaching is augmented with a wide range of co- curricular activities through various clubs and societies. Oratio, Aastha, Srishti, Agnetio, Utsav, Abhinavan, Hanathe, Agno Humanica, Spectrum, Abhaya and NCC help empower them and enhance a student’s personality and foster interest in debating, social service, environment, arts, culture, languages and humanities. Counselling services, moral science, catechism, and value education classes mould the character of our students and help develop a strong moral and ethical sense among the students. This is in keeping with the far- sighted vision of Mother Aloysia who realized that women have a significant contribution to make in all aspects of national life and our students who have left the portals of St Agnes have gone on to make a mark in the world of medicine, politics, administration, law, sports and education etc. The management, staff and students are committed to this mission and work together to get exceptional results and set exemplary standards for a value based education.
The college does an equally outstanding job with extra-curricular and co-curricular activities for the girls are the recipients of several awards at the regional, national and international level in various sporting disciplines. Scholarships and financial aid are also provided to deserving students.
