Trump nominates US representative for WHO Executive Board


Washington, Mar 19 (IANS): US President Donald Trump has nominated Assistant Secretary of Health Brett Giroir as the country's representative to the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO), the White House said.

In a statement on Wednesday, the White House said that the nomination has been sent to the Senate, reports Xinhua news agency.

Giroir is an admiral in the U. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

The WHO Executive Board consists of 34 technically qualified members in the field of health, who serve for three-year terms.

The US currently does not have a representative on the board.

The nomination came amid the rapid spread of COVID-19 across the US.

According to the latest update by Johns Hopkins University, there are currently more than 9,077 confirmed cases and 145 deaths.
