Mangalore, Nov 21: On Friday November 20, several places in the coast received rains. Lightning inflicted losses on some houses and a school building besiding affecting power supply in a few places.
While almost all places in the coastal districts experienced some rains in the afternoon on Friday, the rains were particularly heavy in Bantwal, Puttur, Vittal, Moodbidri, Suratkal, Mulky, Bajpe etc. Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala taluks also got good rains. The city experienced good rains for an hour after 2 pm.
The Krishnapura Junior College building suffered partial damage due to lightning. Its flag pole and power supply systems were destroyed. Electronic equipments of several houses and commercial establishments in Bykampady and Krishnapura were damaged. The court that was prepared for the two-day netball tournament proposed to be held from today in Vittal PU College was damaged due to rains. The Air India flight that came from Mumbai in the afternoon was diverted to Kozhikode because of rains and lightning here. It came back at 3.40 pm and left for Mumbai at 4.15 pm.
Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasargod districts experienced cloudy weather all through Friday, with some rains in the afternoon. The meteorological department has predicted rains to continue for the next two days.
After lightning struck a house owned by Angara Maistry in Admar near Padubidri in the afternoon on Friday, his son, Dayanand (35) was injured. Lightning also struck a house belonging to Bhaskar Kuckian near Narayanaguru Mandir in Guttakad, Kinnigoly, wedging cracks in the wall and burning down the electrical wiring. As no one was at home at the time, further tragedy was averted. Disruption in power supply, and the telephone connection going dead, were reported from several places including Subrahmanya.
