Kasargod, Nov 19: Relating to the disturbances that had rocked the district since the last few days, the policemen have been on an arrest spree. 22 people have so far been taken into custody by them from Anangoor, Nullippady and nearby villages, as a precautionary measure.
Eight people have been arrested in connection with the assault on Mohammed Nishad (32) from Balanadka in Bovikkana, at Karandakkad. Six persons were arrested in connection with the attack on P T Munir (30) and Sheriff Pulkoor at G K Nagar, Siribagil, while seven others were taken into custody in relation to the attack on Ritin (19) and Ramesh (20) at Anangoor. A case has also been registered against a gang of miscreants for torching a motor bike in Lecturers’ Compound and a car at Nullippady, besides shattering the wind shield of a car in Nullippady.
It is reliably learnt, that the crime branch, during its investigation, has found that a 30-member gang was behind the violence unleashed in the district. In the meanwhile, as P Ramadas Pothan, superintendent of police (SP) of the district has been injured, Ernakulam deputy commissioner of police, P Prakash, has been posted as the in-charge SP for the district.
The policemen in the meanwhile, claimed that they have been able to collect clues about the accused involved with the murder of a youth in Karandakkad. The state government decided in a cabinet meet on Wednesday, to hand over the police firing incident in Kasargod last Sunday, in which a Muslim League activist had died, to judicial inquiry. Chief Minister, V S Achutanandan, said later, that the scope of the judicial commission to be set for the purpose, would be decided later.
