Bangalore, Nov 18: The biennial elections to fill the vacancies set to be created with the rotational retirement of 25 members of the legislative council on January 5 will be held on December 18. The Central Election Commission announced the time table for filling the vacant seats of the state legislative councils of Maharashtra and Karnataka, on Tuesday November 17.
The seats for which the elections will be held are, Bidar, Gulbarga, Uttara Kannada, Raichur, Bellary, Chitradurga, Shimoga, Hassan, Mandya, Tumkur, Bangalore, Bangalore Rural, Kolar, Kodagu and Chikmagalur constituencies (one seat each), apart from two seats each from Mysore, Dakshina Kannada, Bijapur, Belgaum and Dharwad constituencies.
Opposition leader in the council, V S Ugrappa, Congress MLCs, K Pratapchandra Shetty, K S L Swami, D M Putte Gowda and Shubhalata Asnotikar from the Congress Party and Kota Srinivas Poojary from the BJP and B Chidanand from the JDS are among those who will retire on January 5.
The Election Commission will issue election notification on Tuesday November 24. December 1 will be the last date for submission of nomination, while scrutiny of nominations will be held on the next day. December 4 will be the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
The election will be held from 8 am to 4 pm on December 18, and counting of votes will be taken up at 8 am on December 21.
