Byndoor, Mar 13: The work of ambitious Saukuru irrigation project, which is going to supply water to the villages of Gulvadi, Karkunje, Kenchanuru, Devalkunda, Katbelturu, Kanyana, Hattiangadi and Tallur is progressing in full throttle.
This project, the estimated cost of which is 73 crore, is started on right bank of Varahi river. As there is a retaining wall for salt water, water will be available in abundance.
The said villages face water problems for agriculture right from the month of March. Even drinking water is a problem in these areas. Now the water is being supplied through water tankers. The local people representatives had worked hard for the project. The government had given the green signal in 2019-20.
Mammoth pumpsets will be used at Gulvadi to lift the water and then pass it through huge pipes. This will not only solve the drinking and agricultural water issues of the people of this area but also increase the ground water level. There is a provision to extend this facility to Uppinakudru villages also.
Due to this irrigation project around 2,300 hectare of land will get water. Around 0.0589 TMC water will be flown through the lift irrigation method.
Udupi district farmers' association has expressed immense joy at the beginning of Saukuru lift irrigation project. Santhosh Kumar Baladi of the association has informed that the association will felicitate MP, MLA and other people representatives who have worked for the implementation of this project.
