Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 12: The incidence of CKD is increasing and is one of the most common causes of death and out-of-pocket health expenditure especially in low and middle-income countries, where most people with kidney failure have insufficient access to life-saving dialysis and kidney transplantation.

The Advanced Transplant Unit, Yenepoya Medical College, keeping in view the theme of this year’s World Kidney Day - Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere – from prevention to detection and equitable access to care, performed the first such kidney transplant on an international patient from Ghana, Africa.

Eric, 45-year-old suffered from end-stage kidney disease and the only option he had in Ghana was to undergo regular dialysis. Speaking to Daijiworld, Dr Nischith D’Souza said, “There were no facilities to perform kidney transplant, even though his brother was ready to donate one of his kidneys."

The MOU between Yenepoya deemed-to-be-University and Ghana government came as a boon to him and he was able to undergo the transplant successfully at the Advanced Kidney Transplant Centre, Yenepoya Medical College, Deralakatte, Mangaluru. The kidney transplant was successfully done by a team of doctors including urologists Dr Mujeeburahiman, Dr Nischith D’Souza, Dr Altaf Khan, Dr Vinit Kumar Singh, vascular surgeon, Dr Ganesh Kamath, nephrologists, Dr Santhosh Pai, Dr Rony and anesthesiologists, Dr Harish Hegde, Dr Thippeswami and Dr Shimar. Laparoscopic donor kidney removal was done, reducing the pain and attaining quick recovery of the donor. Both the recipient and donor are doing well and are getting discharged from the hospital today.

Medical superintendent, Dr Padmanabha said that Yenepoya Medical College Hospital is now a leading hospital in health care tourism and has all the advanced facilities, to treat such international transplant patients. It is also the pioneer in robotic kidney transplants in the region. The pro-chancellor of Yenepoya University, Farhaad Yenepoya, who has a strong vision of equitable health care for all, has hailed the efforts of the team of doctors in carrying out the first successful transplant on an international patient. Nelvin Nelson, co-ordinator of renal transplant and robotics at Yenepoya University, handled the legal work and documentation and successfully coordinated the transplant.
