Mangaluru, Mar 8: Biology department of Mangalore University under the special UGC grant, conducted a national seminar on the subject 'Environment and Ecology Solutions - Present situation and future expectation' at Mangala Auditorium on Saturday, March 7.
Discussion and lectures were given on purifying the polluted soil and the use of living beings for the ecological process of cleaning the same. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof Indrani Karunasagar, director of UNESCO centre for medical and marine technology and director R&D Nitte university.
Speaking on the occasion Prof Indrani said, "Huge waste is produced in the environment due to population explosion and the increase in demands of human beings. Burning waste is not the solution to handle the waste. This is unscientific and increases pollution further. there are many other ways to handle the same. Many forms of viruses though they cannot be seen with naked eye do the work of disposing of the waste by rotting them."
Prof K R Sridhar presided over the function. He gave the keynote address on the subject 'Ecological solution - Recent developments and methods'. In his address, he said, "All living beings on earth have equal right. We are polluting the environment and causing difficulty for all the living being. Bio-remediation is a natural solution to reduced the harmful effects of environmental pollution. More research is required to use this effectively."
Resource person, Prof Balakrishna Hegde spoke on the subject of the effect of changing weather on forests of the tropical region. Prof Muthukumar Muthuswamy spoke on Oxidative technology to remove pollution from wastewater.
Representatives who arrived from various colleges and universities of Karnataka and other states displayed their research papers in the form of posters.
Prof Prashantha Naika did the introductory speech and welcomed the gathering. Dr Tharavati N C rendered the vote of thanks. Laveena compered the programme.
