Udupi, Nov 1: The district Congress Party organized a commemoration programme for the late Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, here on Saturday October 31, on her death anniversary. The programme was organized at the Congress office at Brahmagiri here.
The programme was inaugurated by union labour minister, Mallikarjun Kharge. Addressing the gathering, Kharge appreciated the fact the government programmes are being implemented well in both Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, because of the interest taken by the Congress activists. He advised the party workers to properly get educated about the government programmes and spread information about the same among the general public. He said that the Land Reforms Act came into being because of the interest undertaken by Indira Gandhi for the benefit of Indian peasants.
He wanted voluntary organizations to work to ensure that the benefits of the schemes formulated by the government reach the beneficiaries and asked the party activists to strive towards this task.
He ridiculed the state government of having been busy with sorting out its internal wrangles and not being bothered about the plight of the people. He noted that the Chief Minister has been shouting from the rooftops that the central government has not done anything to help the flood-affected people, but at the same time, the state has not properly utilized the grants given for natural calamities. He exhorted the party workers to lend an ear and respond to the problems of the people, so that the party gains popularity and comes to power in the next local body elections.
Congress leaders Manjunath Bhandary, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Krishnaraj Saralaya, Diwakar Kunder, Keshav Kotian, Sarala Kanchan, Shyamala Bhandary, Pratapchandra Shetty, Moidin Bawa, Ignatius D’Souza, Veronica Carnelio and B H Khader were at the dais.
