Mangaluru, Feb 12: The elections for the posts of the mayor and deputy mayor of the city corporation here have been scheduled to be held on February 28.
Even though the BJP got elected to the corporation council with a huge majority in the election held on November 12, the corporation council was not formed as there was confusion about the reservation criteria fixed for the posts of the city mayor and deputy mayor. It has been exactly three months since the election was held for the council.
Regional commissioner, Yashwant, has written to the city corporation commissioner, informing the latter that the election of the mayor and deputy mayor would be held on February 28. The election process will be performed at 11.30 am that day. Before the election, the 60 newly elected corporators will be administered oath. If necessary, election for the posts of members of the standing committees will also be held that day, corporation sources said.
Diwakar Pandeshwar has good chance
The post of the mayor has been reserved for backward class - A category whereas the deputy mayoral post has been set aside for the woman candidate from general category. Diwakar Pandeshwar, who has won for third time from Cantonment ward, is likely to become the next mayor of the city. To finalize the candidature, a meeting of the BJP will be held during this week in the presence of MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Dr Bharath Shetty Y.
City corporation commissioner Shanadi Ajith Kumar Shetty, said that in tune with the regional commissioner's decision to hold mayoral election at 11.30 am on February 28, all the corporators would be informed through letters.
