Bengaluru, Feb 11: Encouraged by the response it has got for English medium classes opened in a thousand government schools last year, the state education department is preparing to recommend starting of such classes in a thousand additional schools commencing from the next academic year.

The department feels that offering English medium education attracts higher number of intake in government schools. The department has found that English medium education is the single factor that attracts parents to admit children into government schools even though the schools offer facilities like scented milk, midday meal, bicycle, text books, uniforms etc. Even though 30 students were admitted last year in first standard of these schools, there was pressure from parents to increase the intake.

Chairman of Kannada Development Authority T S Nagabharana, reacting to the development, said that the children will learn two languages together. He said those who have learnt both the languages do not dither from speaking in their mother tongue. He insisted that teaching of the languages, to be effective, should be efficient and scientific.
