Panaji, Feb 10: Fr Filipe Neri Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa and Daman has appealed to central government "immediately and unconditionally revoke the Citizenship Amendment Act" and also stop suppressing the "right to dissent".

Archbishop also asked government not to go ahead with nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).

"The Archbishop and the Catholic community of Goa would like to appeal to the government to listen to the voice of millions in India, to stop quashing the right to dissent and, above all, to immediately and unconditionally revoke the CAA and desist from implementing the NRC and the NPR." Said Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media, Goa Church.

Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media, a wing of the Goa Church, in a statement on Saturday said CAA, NRC and NPR have faced widespread criticisms. It noted mass citizens along with top intellectuals have been opposing the new laws. Several protests have taken place across Goa recently. It said Christians in India have always been a peace-loving community and deeply committed to the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, enshrined in the Constitution.

Congratulating PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Goa Assembly recently passed a motion for enacting CAA.
