Mangalore, Oct 7: Two people, one of whom is an experienced inter-state thief, facing over ten different theft cases, got duped after stealing ornaments they thought, were worth over five lac rupees.
On the night of night of Augut 24 this year, they had broken open the doors of a rented house belonging to Navin Kumar in M H New Colony of Kotekar village, and had taken away several ornaments that including waist belt, various types of chains etc. The thieves did not know that Navin Kumar worked as a video grapher and rented out polished ornaments made from cheap materials which looked like gold, for marriage and other functions.
Khalid alias Abdul Khalid alias Kapil Khalid (41) and Mohammed Ashraf (29) are the residents of Casba Bengre. A special intelligence squad of the superintendent of police, led by sub-inspector Prakash K, nabbed the two while they were waiting at a bus stand near the Pumpwell Bus Stand on Monday with a bag in their hands, as their movements looked suspicious.
The policemen say that Khalid, who was once jailed for 14 months in a theft of 2007 here, has ten different cases at various police stations including some in Kerala, against him. He had been jailed for a total term of six years in Kerala, relating to various incidents. Khalid is an expert at breaking open all kinds of locks instantly. He had rented a house in Casba Bengre four months ago. For Mohammed Ashraf, who befriended Khalid of late, this was the first attempt at learning the tricks of the trade.
