Mangalore, Oct 6: The co-ordinating committee of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Association staged a protest in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday October 6 morning.
The protest was staged to seek better facilities for autorickshaw drivers and their children, on par with their counterparts in Tamilnadu and other states, which has awarded pension, ESI, BPL ration cards, PF and scholarship facilities to autorickshaw drivers’ children and many other welfare facilities.
The co-ordinating committee alleged that over 20,000 autorickshaw drivers in the DK earn their livelihood on over 15,000 auto rickshaws, which contributes significantly for both state and union exchequer by way of road tax. However, the autorickshaw drivers are yet to get any worthy benefits from both governments, they alleged.
On the occasion, the office-bearers of co-ordinating committee presented the copies of their memorandums to both tahsildar and assistant commissioner to forward the same to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
