Restricted water supply in Mormugao, Salcete on Jan 15

Margao, Jan 15: Following urgent maintenance, public works department (PWD) will be shutting the 1,400 mm main transmission line of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded 100 MLD water treatment plant. The maintenance work will cause some parts of Salcete and entire Mormugao to have restricted water supply on Wednesday.

PWD assistant engineer Shrikant Gaonkar told TOI that the maintenance work entails installation of two zero velocity valves that will eliminate the creation of back pressure that often leads to breaches in the pipeline, disrupting water supply.

"Generation of backpressure in the pipeline is a common problem. We have had incidents of the bursting of the pipeline recently, and in order to overcome the problem, we had proposed to install zero velocity in the pipeline. The plant will be shut for a day to install these valves," Gaonkar said.

The maintenance work will only have an impact on Mormugao and Salcete and not the rest of south Goa.
