Mumbai, Sep 26: A seminar on ‘Co-relation of Literature and Journalism’ was held on Friday September 25 at Mumbai University (MU) Kalina Campus, Santa Cruz (East).  It was jointly organized by the MU department of Kannada and metro-based Kannadiga Patrakartara Sangh.
 
Kannadiga Patrakartara Sangh–Maharastra president Chandrashekar Palettady presided over the seminar.
 
Veteran Kannada poet, litterateur, and teacher B S Kurkal was the chief guest on the occasion. 
 

Kannada poet, litterateur and journalist Srinivas Jokatte provided information on the co-relation of literature and journalism.
 
Jokatte said that personal attributes are the assets of a journalist. “The reports should be trustworthy and are to be retained for future reference.  The study is essential for a journalist to keep abreast with knowledge. Journalism has got due recognition and freelancers should come out of their shell to pursue in-depth reporting”, he said.
 
Kurkal said that felicitation of an individual indeed inflates the ego and it’s highly essential to lay emphasis on the literary and journalistic qualities of a journalist.  “The creativity and pulse for news reporting makes him a distinct journalist”, he emphasized.
 
Palettady, in his presidential address, said that the metro offers avenues of study.  “The information era has also opened extensive opportunities in journalism.  Meanwhile, literature and journalism are like two sides of the same coin.  An aspiring journalist can succeed with a flair for literature and communication skills to explore creative ideas in reporting”, he said.
 
Dr G N Upadya, head of Kannada department, MU, and recipient of coveted B Shantilal Endowment Award from Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore, was felicitated by MA, M Phil, and PhD students on the same occasion.
 
‘Akshaya’ journal sub-editor Eshwar Alevoor compered the programme.
