Panaji, Jan 8 (IANS): The call for a one-day strike called by trade unions across the country failed to cut much ice across Goa, with only banking and public bus transportation services partially hit by the 'Bharat Bandh'.
The strike, which was called by ten pan-India trade unions also received a mixed response across the country.
While attendance at some nationalised banks was low, some bus operators stayed off the roads in solidarity with the strike call, which did not have an overall impact in Goa.
Speaking at a rally called by the Goa Convention of Workers in Panaji, All India Trade Union Congress General secretary Christopher Fonseca said "the strike was necessary to create an awareness of the anti-people policies of the Central government".
"Many nationalised institutions are being sought to close down by the Central government which will create a lot of unemployment," Fonseca told the rally.
