Mangalore, Sep 10: Three players of a football team were admitted to hospital with injuries after they were attacked by members of another team following a match held on the grounds of Govindadas College in Suratkal on Thursday September 10.
The injured are Pavaz, Isham, and Aproz, students of St Sebastian College in Permannur, and residents of Ullal. All three are pursuing their pre-university course and are members of the college’s football team.
Allegedly, 10-15 members of the Govindadas College football team attacked the St Sebastian College team with deadly weapons like wooden sticks and iron chains.
They carried out the attack after stopping the bus at Suratkal. It is believed they were humiliated after losing the matches repeatedly on the same ground in two tournaments, one of which was held last week. When the match ended in the evening, members of Govindadas team started pelting stones at the other team for they failed to win.
The attackers followed the winners till Suratkal and stopped the bus in which they were travelling towards the city. “At Suratkal junction, some of the team members were standing in front of the bus while others entered the bus and started assaulting us,” said one of the victims.
One of the victims said that the attackers numbered more than 15 and used wooden sticks and chains made of iron to beat the players. He added that the attackers used foul language and told them not to come to Surathkal again.
All the injured have been admitted to Wenlock Hospital in the city and the police have been informed of the incident. The team coach also asked the principal of Govindadas College to take strict action against the students for their offence.
