Mangaluru, Nov 28: Serial killer, Cyanide Mohan, has been found guilty of murdering a woman from Kasargod and has been sentenced to death by the sixth additional district and sessions court by a judgement delivered on Wednesday November 27.
Judge of the court, Sayeedunnisa, had decided on November 22 that the charge of murder has been proved against Mohan. She had fixed November 26 for deciding the quantum of punishment. Hearing about the sentences was held on Tuesday and judgement was delivered on Wednesday.
Mohan has been given death sentence for murder as per section 302 of Indian Penal Code, ten years rigorous imprisonment (RI) under section 366 for abduction with seven years RI and fine of Rs 5,000 for rape, ten years RI and Rs 5,000 fine for feeding cyanide, five years RI and Rs 5,000 fine for stealing by feeding poison, a year of RI for promising of marriage and cheating, seven years RI and Rs 5,000 for destruction of evidence, All these sentences will run concurrently. The court said that if the high court confirms death sentence, all the other sentenced would be merged into death sentence.
Mohan was charged with escorting a 25-year-old woman from Kayyaru village to Kushalnagar on May 21, 2009, raping her after promising of marriage, and then murdering her. With this, he has been given death sentence in five out of 18 cases decided so far. Out of the other four cases, the high court had commuted death sentence into life term in one case, and five years RI in another case. In one case, it upheld death sentence. Another case is pending before the high court for confirmation.
Mohan, who heard the judgement through video conferencing facility from Hindalga prison in Belagavi, remained quiet.
