Mangaluru, Nov 21: State government is planning to introduce soon a new policy pertaining to sea and inland fishing, said minister for Ports and Fisheries and Muzrai, Kota Srinivas Poojary. 

Addressing media here on Thursday, November 21, Poojary who is also the Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister said that the new policy will look into different areas such as production of baby fish, fish transportation, basic facilities for sea fishing and mechanised boats as well as providing security for fishermen. Also, it will look into tackling the atrocities faced by fishermen from other states, he said. 

“The draft copy has been framed and will be presented to the fishermen to have a discussion on it. If required, the Act pertaining to fishing will be amended. There is a demand of over 50 crore baby fish. Hence, upgradation of Narayapura fish production unit will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 4 crore. In addition, third phase of jetty construction will begin at Mangaluru at a cost of Rs 3 crore. In the next three weeks, the proposal will be kept in the cabinet and funds will be released,” he informed. 

He further said," We will also undertake the project for the construction of floating jetty at Mangaluru and Malpe sea shore, worth Rs 6.5 crore based upon technical report by IIT Chennai," 

"We have conducted a meeting with deputy commissioner, police department with regard to illegal sand transportation. The sand is transported to other states without any permit. I have ordered the concerned officials to take stringent action against those illegally transporting sand to other states. No one will be spared,” warned Poojary. 

"Government is also planning to open Matsyadarshini hotel in 31 centres across the state including Mangaluru, Udupi, Bellary, Shivamogga, Beltangady, Sullia, Puttur and many other parts of the state. The project cost is worth Rs 11 crore.” Poojary informed.
