Belagavi, Nov 21: Two high school students have shown that it is possible to grow plants in the farmland using the hair of human beings, which is not of any use otherwise.
Kushi Angolkar and Reminika Yadav, both ninth grade students of Kendriya Vidyalaya here have grown vegetables from the fertilizer that was prepared from human hair.
Both the students started their research four months ago under the guidance of Dr Harsha, scientist with National Institute of Traditional Medicine. Scientists Sridevi Angadi, Praveen Yadahalli and Shantappa Varad also helped in this project.
After certain researches it was found that human hair got lots of nutrients. So it was used as organic liquid fertilizer in the growth of plants. The students sowed the seeds of tomato, cabbage and green chilly using the liquid organic fertilizer made from human hair and got good results. They also got encouragement at the state-level science programme for children.
The duo took 45 days to grow spinach in the campus of Lingaraj College. 50% of farm land was refined twice with human hair fertilizer. After 45 days, both Khushi and Reminika were surprised to see the weight of the harvest of spinach. They had used 2.3 kg traditional human hair fertilizer and got a harvest of 1.7 kg of spinach.
Both Khushi and Reminika are going to take part in the Kendriya Vidyalaya National Science Competition for children, which will be held at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh on November 25.
