Mangaluru: Public awareness programme on diabetes held at KMC Hospital

Mangaluru, Nov 21: A public awareness programme ‘Healthy way with Diabetes’, on the eve of ‘World Diabetes Day – 2019’, was held at KMC Hospital Attavar here on Thursday, November 21. The theme of World Diabetes Day 2019 is family and diabetes.

Addressing the gathering, deputy medical superintendent and associate professor of medicine Dr Deepak Madi said, "Family support is the key for any diabetic patient. We should not delay in getting diagnosed and treated. We should detect diabetes at the earliest and prevent it from becoming serious.”

Associate professor of medicine, Dr Arun S said, "There is 8.7% diabetes prevalence and it is increasing, which is a major problem. It occurs when the amount of glucose in the blood becomes high. There are various types of diabetes such as type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes, which is seen during pregnancy. Type 1 diabetes is less compared to type 2 diabetes, where there is lack of insulin. The symptoms of diabetes are frequent urination, extreme fatigue, slow healing of wounds, blurred vision, loss of weight, tummy pain and frequent infection.

Deputy manager relationship and communication Rakesh compered the programme. Assistant professor and retina specialist Dr Gladys and dietitian Sushma were present. After the programme, there was free random sugar and BP checkup.
